Not measuring wall depth
Wall depth is the measurement most often skipped, and it is the one that turns a simple installation into a construction project. A standard interior wall framed with 2x4 studs gives roughly 3.5 inches of usable cavity, while many built-in electric fireplaces need considerably more.
In practice, this is the problem we hear about most often after the fact. Someone chooses a deep built-in unit, then finds they have around six inches of clearance where the fireplace needs twelve. The fix is building the wall out: framing, drywall, and finish work that was never in the plan, and that changes how the finished wall sits in the room.
Before ordering any recessed or built-in unit, find the required depth on the spec sheet rather than the product photos, measure your actual cavity depth accounting for studs and anything running inside the wall, and if the numbers do not match, decide whether you are building out or choosing a shallower model. Choosing the model before the installation type
Installation type constrains the model list far more than brand or price does, so deciding it first eliminates most of the catalog immediately. Doing it in the other order means shortlisting units that were never viable for your wall.
There are four options and they solve different problems. A wall-mounted fireplace hangs on the surface with no framing and usually plugs into a standard outlet. Not confirming the circuit
A 1,500 watt electric fireplace draws 12.5 amps, which is more than a 15-amp circuit should carry continuously. This is the detail that most often stalls an installation, because it surfaces after the wall is already framed.
The National Electrical Code treats a heater running three hours or more as a continuous load, and Article 210.23 limits a continuous load to 80 percent of the circuit rating. That means 12 amps on a 15-amp circuit and 16 amps on a 20-amp circuit. A 1,500 watt fireplace therefore wants a 20-amp circuit, ideally a dedicated one.
The questions worth answering before you order are what circuit serves that wall, whether it is already shared with other rooms, and whether the panel has room for another one. Sizing to the room instead of the wall
Fireplace width should be judged against the wall or media console it sits on, not the square footage of the room. Common design guidance puts the unit at roughly half to two-thirds of that width, and undersizing is the more frequent error.
A small fireplace on a wide, empty wall reads as unfinished, particularly under a large television. The same unit on a narrower wall can look exactly right. This is why two people with identically sized rooms can need different fireplaces.

Expecting furnace-level heat
Electric fireplaces are supplemental heaters, and buying one as a primary heat source leads to disappointment regardless of brand or price. Heat output is listed on every manufacturer spec sheet in watts and BTU per hour, and it varies more between models than most shoppers expect.
Width is not a proxy for warmth either. A wider fireplace does not necessarily produce more heat than a narrower one, because the heater is a separate component from the flame display. Check the figure for the specific model rather than assuming a category standard.

Buying from the product photo
Flame realism is produced three different ways, and the method matters more than how the unit looks in a styled photograph. Product images are shot in ideal lighting and rarely tell you which technology is inside.
LED flame projection is the most common and the least expensive. Layered LED with an independently lit ember bed adds depth and sits in the mid and premium range. Water vapor uses ultrasonic mist lit from below, producing flames you can pass your hand through, and needs a reservoir refilled periodically.
